A playlist of SOME songs I have discovered or rediscovered my love for this summer, which is sadly passing by at outrageous speeds. Come back in August for some more good music!

J's Album Pick of the Week

The Chemical Brothers just released their new single "Another World". I love these guys, especially their new LP, Further. If you're into electronic dance beats (or you just like good music) then you are in luck! The Chemical Brothers are basically the godfathers of the genre. In 1995 they became well known with the release of Exit Planet Dust. Alive Alone was the first single back then and features Beth Orton, so obviously it's awesome! Lately I've been really into things that were popular in the mid-90s. Call it nostalgia, call it regression, call it whatever you like, but you can't deny that some great bands came out of that era. The Chemical Brothers are certainly one of them.

Current Obsession: Cage the Elephant

The audio treat, Cage The Elephant, was forged between two brothers Matt and Brad Schultz and their three friends; Daniel Tichenor, Lincoln Parish , and Jared Champion during their junior year of high school in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The boys make tribute to their influences; Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Ramones, Led Zeppelin, Chuck Berry, the Rolling Stones, Nirvana, and the Pixies to name a few musical messiahs. If you haven't yet had the opportunity to listen, do it! Aside from their obvious lyrical and instrumental talent, why I really love this band is their ruckus attitude that makes me feel like I'm back at age 18, in my 1991 Honda Civic with the windows down. If I had to pick only three favorite songs they would be; In One Ear
Ain't No Rest for the Wicked, and, Back Against the Wall. Start, but don't stop there, as you give them a listen! For those of you in the Denver vicinity, Cage the Elephant will be playing with The Stone Temple Pilots at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, August 10Th!

Heavy Rotation: Heavy Cross

I've been playing Heavy Cross by GOSSIP on repeat pretty much since I woke up this morning. It's such a good song. An excellent choice for riding in the car especially. I mos def recommend taking a listen over at their myspace page and then proceeding to purchase the entire Music for Men album. Trust me, you're gonna want to.

J's Album Pick of the Week: Throwback Edition

Remember Hole? That band Courtney Love sings in? Well if you don't, it could mean one of two things are true about you. The first could be that you were born after 1990 and you just weren't relevant back when Hole was truly amazing. For this I will judge, but not blame you. The second could be that you were born pre-1990, but you've never been cool enough to listen to awesome bands........until you started reading this blog, of course. There are two reasons I felt the need to talk about Hole today. One, I have a bit of an unhealthy obsession with Courtney Love. I recently had the privilege of watching her episode of Behind the Music. Long story short, it changed my life. Sort of had the same effect on me as the first time I saw David Beckham's Armani Exchange ads. Yup, it was that life altering. The fact that she is still alive and kickin' totally blows my mind. Another thing that totally blows my mind is Live Through This, which is the second, and actual, reason I wanted to talk about Hole today. By far Hole's best album, it was released in 1994 just after Kurt Cobain's suicide. It's so good. So so so good. I highly recommend you listen to the entire album over at Grooveshark. I also totally recommend you set your tivo to record the next time Vh1 airs that episode of BtM, but that's beside the point. (Sorry for using 'totally' so many times, I'm mos def in a 90s frame of mind today).
Hole is still around these days. And still awesome for that matter. Just not as awesome as they were in the 90s, but what is really? If you decide you like Hole, and I'll admit, this music isn't for everyone; you should check out their 1998 release Celebrity Skin, the title track of which I have been obsessed with since approximately 1998. Love it!

Heavy Rotation: Remember When

Lately I've been listening to Remember When by Heathers. When I say listening, I mean sitting at my computer pressing repeat for hours and hours every day. I don't know what it is, but I can't get over how much I love this song.
